More Snow in Europe: up to 43 inches reported

40 cms fell on Avoriaz during the night of Nov. 5 | Photo: Avoriaz Ski Resort

Another big storm is bearing down on ski resorts in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps, and we’re seeing some impressive photos of the resulting accumulations. The storm started on Tuesday and has already outperformed the original forecast. Read on to see which resorts received the biggest snow totals so far.

Flakes flew in downtown Chamonix the night before last, which means higher elevations were hammered with heavy snow. On the other side of Mont Blanc, Courmayeur started their day today with bluebird skies and snow-covered slopes. Also in France, Val d’Isere received 20 cm (almost 8 inches) of new snow, and they woke up to winter scenes in their webcams this morning.

Avoriaz has posted the most impressive photo and video evidence of the storm and 40 cm (15.5 inches) of new snow in their village.

Do yourself a favor and take a mental break with this video of snow falling at Avoriaz.

Weather2Ski, a British snow forecasting website, reported that central and southern areas of Switzerland tallied the biggest snow totals with areas around Zermatt and Andermatt receiving 70-100 cm (25 – 40 inches). Italian resorts also saw massive snow totals, including Cervinia, which received 110 cm (43 inches) at 2,800 meters (about 9,000 feet).  PlanetSki.eu is reporting big snow totals in Saas Fee with 45 cm (17.7 inches) in the village and 1.5 meters (almost 60 inches!) at the top of the mountain. With news like this, it’s no wonder they’re opening for an early weekend of skiing Nov. 7 and 8!
