From Polar Vortexes to ice storms in the Deep South, winter weather has topped news headlines throughout January and early February. Luckily for us skiers and snowboarders, inclement weather doesn’t mean headaches; it means powder days! Here’s the inside track on which regions have reaped the rewards of back-to-back snow storms in early 2014:
Colorado Ski Resorts
Late last week, a powerful storm bore down on the entire state and set records for single-day snowfall. Most Colorado ski resorts tallied more than a foot of new snow, and the big winners — like Aspen/Snowmass, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Crested Butte and Vail — received three feet or more. Telluride and Powderhorn caught up with big snowfall totals this week, and more winter storm warnings have been issued, portending even better base depths and more powder days.
Montana and Wyoming Ski Resorts
Big Sky and Moonlight Basin started 2014 with new snow reported on the first 8 out of 10 days of January, and, in the last week, more than 20 inches has fallen on the “Biggest Skiing in America.” Jackson Hole is a storm magnet and has received more than 21 feet of snow so far this season. Its neighbor to the north — Grand Targhee — has an impressive 90-inch base and topped the Teton storm totals in the last week with 30 inches of new snow!
Europe Ski Resorts
The Southern Alps and the Dolomites are having a great season with consistent snowfall and cold temperatures. The on-piste skiing is excellent at Chamonix, Courchevel, Val d’Isere and Tignes, and storms are forecast to move across France and into Austria this week. Currently Italian resorts have the best conditions in the Alps with Cervinia boasting a 79-inch base on its lower slopes and much more in areas that connect to neighboring Zermatt in Switzerland. In the Dolomites, Cortina has a 122-inch base on its upper slopes, and Val Gardena was hit with massive storms in the last week, with 41 inches of new snow falling in one 24-hour period!
