About Whitewater

There’s a reason this one-of-a-kind ski resort has been considered by Powder Magazine as “one of best powder mountains on the continent.” Located in the Selkirk Mountains on the famous Powder Highway in British Columbia, and just outside of Nelson, Whitewater Ski Resort is graced with an average of 40-plus feet of light, dry snow every season. Its natural terrain is spread over 1,320 acres of steeps, deeps, chutes, bowls and glades. This abundance of snow, coupled with the resort's rugged terrain, makes it a top destination for skiers and snowboarders seeking a true mountain experience.

Whitewater is particularly famous for its tree skiing and the ease of access it provides to backcountry areas, making it a favorite among those seeking adventure beyond the resort's boundaries. History buffs and anyone fond of historic towns will love spending time in Nelson, which has done an exceptional job of preserving silver-mining boom-era buildings. Nelson is home to 10,000 people and boasts a plethora of restaurants, shops and bars.

This lift-serviced backcountry scene has given the mountain legendary status amongst avid skiers and off-piste snowboarders. Best of all, big crowds and lift lines are virtually non-existent at Whitewater. Off the mountain, guests of Whitewater can head into nearby Nelson, just 15 minutes from the mountain, and enjoy over 40 restaurants, an array of accommodation options, hot springs and a winter vibe unlike any other. For those in search of an authentic, core ski vacation experience, you’ll find it at Whitewater Ski Resort. Although Whitewater is off the beaten path and retains a reputation as a no-frills resort, it enjoys a close locale to the lively little mountain town of Nelson.

Skiing in Whitewater

Whitewater previously enjoyed a reputation as a small ski area, with just two chairs, and provided skiers with a mellow skiing experience, but the resort’s recent expansion and construction of Glory Ridge triple chair on the resort’s backside resulted in an influx of hardcore powder seekers. Overnight the resort doubled in size and added 2,000-plus feet of vertical. These days advanced and expert skiers enjoy a majority 56 percent of Whitewater’s terrain. Hardcore skiers and boarders just can’t get enough of Whitewater’s snorkel-deep steeps, bowls, trees and glades. But beginners and intermediates are still well served with some of Canada’s best natural corduroy.

Beginner Skiing in Whitewater Ski Resort

Whitewater terrain allots 12 percent to beginner skiers, making it suitable for someone looking to learn. Keep in mind though, this resort gets a staggering 40 feet of snow on average in winter. More experienced beginners will most appreciate the Silver King Side of the resort which provides novices with eight gentle, wide cruisers to choose from. Early beginners and those just learning to ski or snowboard will probably prefer the short, gentle green slope located off the Hummer chairlift.
