For those cruising up from Milan, hop onto the Strada Statale 36 dello Spluga toward Lecco-Chiavenna. If you're coming from the northeast, take the scenic route via Strada Statale 38 through Sondrio-Morbegno, then merge onto SS 36 to Madesimo.
